"All of It, All at Once"
This weekend was full. I was solo parenting again while my wife was away, and the days stacked up quickly.

It started with the five-year-old’s sports day at school. He did brilliantly. Won the javelin event, which was actually a pool noodle, and somehow got all three bean bags in the hoop. It was one of those moments where he looked confident and proud, and I caught myself grinning without even realising.

The next day was the three-year-old’s preschool induction. I thought he might be shy, maybe clingy. But the moment we walked in, he was off. Exploring, chatting, joining in. Afterwards he told me he never wanted to leave. That same day, the five-year-old had his transition session to Year 1. Another big step, handled without fuss. As a reward, I took him to the bike park. He surprised me again. Tried the BMX track, tackled a full stretch of hills, and didn’t flinch. I could see him push through his own nerves and feel the pride land as he rolled to the end.

Saturday was a play date in the garden. Warm weather, water pistols, all the classic summer chaos. It was great. Until it wasn’t. The scooter ride home turned into a full-blown meltdown. The five-year-old refused to leave his friend’s house. He was “starving,” even though we’d just had dinner. I think it was more than hunger. Probably tiredness, or just too much stimulation after a big few days. Either way, I had to march him home shouting and kicking the whole way.

By Monday, my wife came home. I’d done most things, but not all of them. I’d missed the key bit of laundry. The school uniform from Friday was still in the basket, and we had to run a rush wash and dry cycle to get it ready in time. That was the final straw. Not dramatic, just the slow wave of exhaustion catching up.

Sometimes you do everything you can. You juggle it all, show up for every moment, keep the rhythm going. But there’s always something left undone. And when the pace doesn't slow down, it just builds.

Think: Are you expecting yourself to carry too much without pause? Are you measuring your success by what’s missing, or by how much you’re holding together?
